CREATING BOUNDARIES

business blog Feb 11, 2020

If working in the entertainment industry has taught me anything, it's that if you don't create boundaries for yourself...someone else will. - Tweet This!

Now, if you're a Type A creative like me, you probably pride yourself on your die-hard-stop-at-nothing-till-I-get-it-right attitude, right?

Trust me. It's one of the things I admire most about us!

But if we've neglected to set some boundaries in the beginning, chances are we'll end up getting burned out (if it hasn't happened already) on the very thing we love.

And it doesn't even matter what our role is:

We could be the employee and we might be at that point in our career where we're trying to climb the ladder. Naturally, that means putting in some longer hours and working on extra projects to prove ourselves. But that doesn't mean we don't need time away to recharge our batteries.

We could be the CEO and when we started our business, we thought it would be a good idea for all decisions to be run through us. But flash forward to today, does it really make sense that we're the one in charge of picking out what phone service we use?

Heck, we could be a stay at home parent but if we're the sole caretaker of our kids, chances are, we're going to get burned out and need a little break from time to time.

See, it doesn't matter what your role is, boundaries are boundaries and we all need them.

SET YOUR OWN BOUNDARIES

The first thing you have to remember is that no one is going to say, "Hey, you look like you need a break! Why don't you go home and get some rest."

It's up to you to figure out what you need and then make sure you're getting it.

One of the easiest ways to do this is to ask yourself what's important to you and what do you need to be happy.

A quick exercise to do this is to ask yourself what are the 3 biggest things that make you happy?

For me, it goes like this:

1. Control over my own schedule

2. Time alone to recharge

3. Time with friends/family

When I have these three things, I am by far a happier person and definitely more productive. And if you notice, they all have to do with time.

I crave time alone to be creative, work out, be with my thoughts, etc. I also need time with friends and family. I'm a total social butterfly and get my energy from being around other people.

In order to have both of these things, control over my own schedule is paramount. So when I'm negotiating a new contract or project, I make sure to manage expectations and create my boundaries with these three things in the forefront of my mind.

How do you create boundaries in your business?
